Problems with the Office of the District Attorney:

The jail is at max capacity, and understaffed, which costs the taxpayers and creates dangerous conditions at the jail for the employees and inmates.

A severe lack of seasoned attorneys exists

We are not maximizing existing community resources like Mental Health treatment for long term crime reduction.

The DA's Office is still sending too many people with substance abuse disorder to prison, wasting taxes and breaking up families.

The DA's Office has allowed a huge backlog of felony cases to clog the court dockets, while defendants and victims twist in the wind.

The DA's Office still ignores the generational trauma of over-enforcement in poor communities of color.

The DA's Office is regularly using mandatory minimum sentencing and habitual felony enhancements for non-violent crime.

The DA's Office prosecutes people for felony littering and community advocacy.

No one cares about poor people. That is a big part of the problem. Ignoring how much poverty contributes to over enforcement.

I have been a Public Defender for 20 plus years, exclusively in Buncombe County. Criminal law is my specialty, but I am not a career prosecutor. As the most experienced candidate, I have a historical perspective of prosecutorial injustice and wasted resources in our community, when a traditional DA's office is in charge. I am the only candidate who is a mom, who understands family unity is deeply scarred and uprooted, regularly by a traditional criminal justice system, which has destroyed families and caused generational trauma for children and families. I am the only Candidate who is on record as supporting the right to choose, no matter what. I am the only candidate who will defend you against the Trump administration by prosecuting federal agents who break state laws. For 20 plus years, I have stood between my client and the government, protecting their Due Process rights and fighting for them! I will fight for our community and I will use the enormous power of the office to make sure our law enforcement reflects local community values. We can be safer and freer at the same time.
